Local "Renaissance Man" Lorne Adrain Launches Global Network to Empower the Next Generation of Human Rights Leaders

​Rhode Island resident Lorne Adrain has a long history of community service, but his latest venture is casting a truly global footprint. Adrain is the founder of Global Fellows in Courage (GFiC), an international accelerator program designed to empower young human rights advocates from around the world.
Recently featured on the Rhode Island Wave newspaper's spotlight interview series, Adrain shared the vision behind his organization. "We find the young Malalas and Mandelas and MLKs and we help them get better at what they do and do more, better, faster," he explained.
The initiative focuses on social entrepreneurs between the ages of 25 and 35 who are tackling some of the world's most pressing human rights issues. These emerging leaders are working to improve access to education, build businesses for women and girls, advocate for systemic legal changes, and clean up local environments.
A Foundation of Service
For Adrain, a lifelong dedication to helping others was practically predestined. Growing up as one of eight children, his parents instilled a deep sense of civic duty through their own actions; his father served as a volunteer Scoutmaster, and his mother regularly delivered Meals on Wheels.
"I didn't have a prayer. It was destiny," Adrain joked, noting that his decades in the Boy Scouts and his college fraternity both centered around the core philosophy of helping others.
Twenty-five years ago, Adrain founded the Social Enterprise Greenhouse to help social entrepreneurs build organizations that do good in the community. Building on that foundation, he launched Global Fellows in Courage with the realization that young, dedicated activists around the globe possess incredible potential but often lack the resources to scale their impact.
Real-World Impact: The Story of Ida
To illustrate the transformative power of the GFiC program, Adrain highlighted the story of Ida, a young woman from Morocco. Growing up, Ida watched her mother spend entire days weaving placemats and rugs, only to sell them to a middleman for a mere $10. By the time the product reached a consumer, it was sold for $100.
After learning coding and business skills, Ida decided to disrupt this cycle. She built a platform that allows weavers to connect more directly with buyers. Today, Ida's mother sells her daily work for $90 instead of $10.
"She's now got 2,000 women on her platform throughout Morocco," Adrain shared. With the support of GFiC, Ida is currently working to double her network and expand into four other countries across Africa and the Middle East.
An Accelerator More Selective Than Harvard
The demand for this kind of support is staggering. Last year, GFiC utilized AI tools to reach out to human rights organizations worldwide, resulting in 2,445 applications for just 45 fellowship seats—making the program statistically more selective than Harvard University.
The six-month curriculum operates entirely virtually, utilizing Zoom to connect fellows across six continents. This digital format not only breaks down geographical barriers but also allows GFiC to surround the fellows with what Adrain calls "concepts, connections, and capital."
Participants are mentored by a network of over 60 global coaches and are given the opportunity to learn directly from Nobel Peace Prize winners, Harvard Business School deans, Brown University faculty, and United Nations officials. Despite the virtual setting, fellows frequently connect in person, building powerful, real-world collaborations.
A Call for Coaches and Support
Looking ahead to Vision 2030, Global Fellows in Courage aims to develop a dynamic network of over 300 human rights leaders worldwide. For the current cohort alone, the ripple effect of their work is projected to positively impact 1.6 million people.
To achieve this ambitious goal, Adrain is calling on experienced professionals to get involved. While the organization is always seeking financial support, there is a profound need for volunteer coaches who can pass the baton to the next generation.
"I've had my career and I've learned a lot, and I like the opportunity to share that with other people who are carrying the baton," Adrain, 72, explained. "It's a really interesting, exciting, and satisfying experience to help some young person somewhere else in the world who's trying to do something good."
