Ali “Zoe” Adam’s life story reads like a Hollywood script—one that he is now directing himself. Born in Haiti and immigrating to the United States at just nine years old, Adam grew up in Miami where he became a co-founder of the notorious street faction, Zoe Pound. His involvement in the criminal underworld eventually led to an 18-year federal prison sentence for a major drug conspiracy. Today, at 51 years old, he is a published author, a filmmaker, and a hip-hop mogul dedicating his time to music and community empowerment, including right here in Rhode Island. Adam recently sat down for the Rhode Island Weave’s Spotlight Interview series to discuss his remarkable transformation. Entering the federal prison system at age 32, Adam lost what he calls the prime years of his life. "I lost my whole 30s and 40s," he shared. The reality of his situation set in quickly. "When you get a felony, you lose your rights. You think shoplifting is easy, but you have to know you just lost your rights. There is no back and forth." Instead of letting bitterness consume him—a fate he watched many other inmates succumb to—Adam decided to change his trajectory. After a few years of adjusting to his environment, he shifted his focus entirely toward education and self-improvement. He began reading the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, and soon after, he started teaching classes to his fellow inmates on health, business, and politics. Most notably, Adam became a prolific writer. During his incarceration, he authored 11 books, including Zoe Pound Mafia, The Making of a Zoe, and The Hip-Hop Republican Party Manifesto, all of which he successfully published on Amazon. "I did the rest of the 14 years out of the 18 productively," Adam explained. "It showed me that change is meant to be... the change that I found within being able to do something constructive, that's it." Since his release, Adam has hit the ground running. He wrote and directed a movie titled Zoe's Bone, currently streaming on Tubi, and he hosts his own podcast. Drawing on his deep ties to hip-hop culture, he now manages an extensive roster of artists. Armed with a major distribution deal, he is actively seeking and promoting new talent. His journey has recently brought him to Rhode Island, aided by his close friend Andreas from the local venue Wonderland. Adam is currently collaborating with over a hundred local artists, aiming to shine a spotlight on the Rhode Island rap scene. From shooting music videos under local bridges to capturing the distinct voices of Providence and beyond, he is working to elevate the region's hip-hop presence. Adam’s story of redemption has already captured massive attention online, with long-form interviews on platforms like VladTV and The Art of Dialogue pulling in hundreds of thousands of views. Now, he hopes his journey serves as a cautionary tale for the youth, proving that while the streets offer a quick path to losing your freedom, it is never too late to rewrite your own story. Stay tuned for our upcoming, in-depth follow-up interview with Ali "Zoe" Adam, where we will dive even deeper into his street history, his time in the federal system, and his ongoing projects.
