​Local shop owner Linda Peters transforms secondhand shopping into an art form
For nearly 19 years, Linda Peters has been helping Rhode Islanders discover treasure while supporting environmental sustainability at Consignors! Designer Resale, located at 95 Frenchtown Road on the border of North Kingstown and East Greenwich.
What started as a natural extension of Peters' upbringing as the oldest of nine children has evolved into a beloved destination for designer consignment shopping. "We kind of grew up with that resale, recycle, consignment, thrift kind of shopping," Peters explains. Her background as a realtor, where she frequently visited resale shops to stage homes, further motivated her to open her own store.
More Than Meets the Eye
Don't be fooled by the modest exterior—Consignors! is significantly larger than it appears from the street. The shop spans multiple rooms and even includes a basement clearance section with buy-one-get-one deals.
"People say, 'Oh my gosh, it's going to take me five hours to get through here,'" Peters laughs. The main floor features everything from Coach to Chanel handbags, Jimmy Choo to Nine West shoes, and designer jewelry ranging from costume pieces to vintage antiques. The home goods section offers glassware, collectibles, furniture, and décor items.
Peters focuses exclusively on top-quality brands. "We can't compete with Marshalls and TJ Maxx," she notes, "but we offer top-quality resale items at 75% off original retail prices."
A Mission Beyond Profit
For Peters, the shop represents more than a business—it's a commitment to environmental responsibility. "I definitely believe in recycling and going green and watching out for our environment," she says. The growing popularity of thrift shopping, particularly among college students from RISD and other local schools, reinforces this mission.
"I get a lot of young college kids coming in two, three, and four at a time going, 'Oh, we're thrifting today,'" Peters observes. "These young people know that reselling and reusing and repurposing is going to cut down on using up our natural resources."
Peters often encounters stories that reinforce her environmental message. Customers frequently tell her about clearing out estates and throwing valuable items in dumpsters. "I say, 'Stop! Let me see it first, let's see what we can do,'" she explains. She even accepts furniture that needs repair, enjoying the process of repurposing and refinishing pieces to give them new life.
Shopping and Consigning
Consignors! operates Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with appointments available outside regular hours. Peters, a mother of two and grandmother of six, deliberately keeps Sundays reserved for family time.
The shop accepts quality consignments by appointment, and Peters encourages potential consigners to text or email photos for initial screening. "I'm always open to looking at estates and quality consignments," she says.
With the holiday season approaching, Peters notes that many items still have original tags, making them perfect for gift-giving. "Something special, something unique," she emphasizes.
